I’m sure you were glued to your seats watching the Tony Awards last night! Who wasn’t! Really, if you weren’t watching the Tony Awards you probably missed the best awards show of the year. Emmys, be warned. And aside from the fact that musicals rock (yeah I said it!) I was really watching it for the star studded performance of Company which luckily didn’t come until way at the end.
So, in the meantime, I was treated to amazing performances from some of the best Broadway shows of the year, most notably: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Scottsboro Boys and, of course, The Book of Mormon. And by amazing, I mean, forget how to succeed in business, how do you succeed at breathing without really trying while leaping and spinning and running and jumping and sweating and tossing and sweating and catching and sweating and (Breathe! Breathe! Breathe!) and SINGING! For F%^$ sake! SINGING!
So why the interest in Company? The cast list included Stephen Colbert! The rest of the folks included Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Hendricks, Jon Cryer, Martha Plimpton, Anika Noni Rose and Patti LuPone. And while the run might have been short with only four performances, as Broadway.com explains, “Rarely has a theater event been as highly anticipated as the recent New York Philharmonic production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company.”
Don’t worry if you missed it. Apparently they’re making a film version with limited distribution. But chances are once its theatrical run is over, the DVDs will be ready.
